It’s the second half of the year, and we’re writing a blog about the top design trend of 2025. Didn’t all the other designers already write those blogs in January and February? We might be a little late to the party. But then again, our top trend may not be very trendy at all. So, without further ado, our top design trend of 2025 is timeless design.
Timeless design may not be edgy, but it has staying power. The only trouble is, timeless design usually evokes images of a specific style. To some, timeless design is a 1800s Federal, to others it’s a 1910 Arts & Crafts, and still others say modern is the only design style that will truly pass the test of time. All is right.
The point is, timeless design can’t be style-specific. Instead, we believe that timeless design can be achieved through these three pillars: natural materials, proper proportions, and good construction details.
The First Pillar of Timeless Design: Natural Materials
If it comes from the earth, chances are it will never go out of style.
Think of things like wood, stone, and metal. Throw concrete, brick, clay tile, and glass into the mix, and you have all you need for a timeless design. If a material has been used in building for a millennium, it’s safe to consider it timeless. *Note that modern concrete uses Portland cement, which was invented in 1824, but the basic mixture is similar to what the Romans once used.
Beware of impostors. Modern technology has enabled manufacturers to make some pretty believable counterfeits. Don’t take the bait! Close is not good enough, and nearly all look-a-likes produce an inferior end product. When in doubt, choose the real thing.
How Proper Proportions Create Timeless Interiors
Timeless design speaks in proportion. Proportioning is the subtle way elements relate to each other that makes a space feel balanced.
- How do the sizes of the various rooms relate to each other?
- Which rooms are the largest, which are smallest, and why?
- How does the ceiling height relate to the floor area?
- Are baseboards, casings, and millwork sized in harmony with the room?
- How does the scale of a window frame your view?
- What’s the first thing your eye lands on when you enter?
Good proportioning is invisible, but unmistakable. It shapes how we move through and emotionally experience a space. And when done right, it creates flow that never feels forced.
Why Lasting Construction Details Define Timeless Design
To truly stand the test of time, design must go beyond surface aesthetics.
If we want our buildings to be timeless, they have to (literally) stand the test of time. The most beautiful building will not be timeless if it can’t withstand the elements. Architects and designers are most often associated with aesthetics, but in our opinion, producing good construction details is the true measure of a design professional. How a building is designed to handle water, air, and vapor is just as crucial as its aesthetic appeal.
This means designing with intention:
- How does the structure handle water, air, and vapor?
- Are transitions between materials seamless and lasting?
- Will it age gracefully, or quickly deteriorate?
Timelessness is Our Foundation
It’s no surprise that timeless design is our top design trend of the year; it’s the foundation of everything we do. We want our buildings to last for centuries. Spoiler alert: We have a sneaky suspicion that timeless design will be our top trend of 2026, too.
