A Charleston-Inspired Living Room

At Reisenauer Design Co., we believe a room should do more than just look beautiful. It should feel like a breath of fresh air. This pastel-inspired living room was born from that belief, inspired by the historic charm and coastal elegance of Charleston, South Carolina.

A Charleston-Inspired Living Room Refresh

The Inspiration Behind This Charleston-Inspired Living Room Mood Board

This design began, quite simply, with a feeling.

The soft pastel colors of Charleston didn’t just inspire us, its rhythm moved us. There’s something unhurried and romantic about the way the city reveals itself. The softness of a peeling pastel facade at golden hour, the curve of ironwork shadows on sun-bleached sidewalks, the peace of a shaded courtyard just steps from the bustling street. That balance of liveliness and calm became the heartbeat of this living room design.

We wanted the space to feel like it had been lived in and loved over time. We chose each element to reflect that spirit. Whimsical patterns, pleated textures, and subtly curved furniture were selected to serve the feeling we wanted the space to evoke: cozy, coastal ease with an undercurrent of Southern charm.

Although a feeling was the root of our design, colors played an essential role in bringing the room to life. We paired soft greens and sun-washed pinks with ivory upholstery and warm brass tones to evoke a sense of gentle aging. A playful lattice pattern wallpaper not only added color, but dimension and character to the space.

This mood board isn’t built around products. It’s built around a lifestyle for those who want a home that is refined enough for guests, but cozy enough for curling up with your favorite book. This Charleston-inspired living room absolutely delivered. The beautiful space achieved every design goal, and the result was a cozy, welcoming space that felt lived in and loved.

Designer Tips That Shape the Space

Good design starts with sound guidance. That’s why every sourcing sheet we create includes not just links, but strategy. Here are a few of the tips we follow when designing a space, which we implemented on this project:

Wainscot Proportions – A good rule of thumb is to cap your wainscot at about one-third the height of your wall (typically 32–36″). Want something a bit more formal or dramatic? Go slightly higher to elongate the room and elevate the feel.

Lighting Makes the Room – Lighting isn’t just functional—it’s foundational. Layer ambient, task, and accent lighting to support the way you live. Think: overhead light for brightness, a floor lamp for reading, and a table lamp for mood. A good rule of thumb is that every seat should have a light near enough for a task or reading.

Leave Space for What’s to Come – Intentionally leave room for growth. We always leave breathing space in our designs for meaningful pieces collected over time, like vintage art, travel finds, and heirlooms. These are what make a space truly yours.

Your Room, Reimagined

This living room is more than a set of selections. It’s a moment of pause and a reflection of the life you want to lead at home. And now, you can bring that same intentionality into your own space.
